ARLYNE BERZAK
Although I have always dabbled in sketching and painting, it was not until I retired that I decided to become a serious artist at the age of 77. I have always been fascinated by color and pictorial design which is evident in my unusual work which incorporates collage elements with various media such as watercolor, oil paint, and acrylic mediums. My concern for the environment led me to use various paper materials from old books and magazines as recyclable material. Collage is a building experience. I am continually collecting unusual papers and images. that catch my eye and file them away for future use. I begin with a background of either paint or an interestingly designed paper then add a central figure. I add items that enhance the theme or are needed for color, line or texture. Rarely do I glue down the pieces at the first try. I move items, add and subtract until I am satisfied with the final product which is then glued in place. My colors have been influenced by the brilliant colors of the Fauve movement. The patterns in my collages are reminiscent of Matisse’s use of textile patterns in his paintings and his later life’s work which consisted of brilliantly colored paper cutouts. My work has been described as a fearless combination of strange and unique elements which create my own brand of surrealism. Recently, I moved from flat surfaces to creating 3 dimensional elements which look like glass. My work has been displayed in several group shows at The Montclair Art Museum, the Salmagundi Club and The Waltuch Gallary as well as many solo shows. I am currently a docent at the Montclair Art Museum where I spend a great deal of my time either painting in the studio or giving tours to the many students and adults who frequent the Museum. |
